“Cross the river.” It was Jessie.

Nick swallowed hard and blinked.

“Trust me, Nick, they won’t expect you to cross the river. Once you cross the river, you can get air aid in at first light.”

It sounded like Jessie, but came as a thought. Nick shook his head. What would a girl know about any of this?

“More than you could ever realize, pal.”

“I say we cross the fucking river instead of joining their dance.” Nick said. “Take our chances in the water…seems a better move than walking straight into their waiting arms.”

Beanie rose, put his fingers in his mouth and let out a whistle so piercing, even the Viet Cong stopped firing. “We’re wading the Rio Grande!” He yelled before ducking back down. “Some of those asswipes speak English, but they don’t know Spanish.”

“We’re gonna lay down cover fire for them until they can get farther out. You down with that?” Nick looked out at the group of men now moving toward the water. He couldn’t tell if Oliver was still among them. “Sure.”

“I’ll stay here. You get your ass about thirty yards that direction. When I start firing, go for it. Keep the ammo coming. If they’re shootin’ at us, they aren’t shootin’ at our guys.”

“Roger that.”

“Oh, and Nicky? Thanks for coming for us. I couldn’t do weeks of that shit without being a vegetable by the time they pulled me out.”

“Buy me a drink later.”

Beanie chuckled. “You’re on.”

As Nick quickly made his way through the moonlit darkness, he remembered when their platoon adopted the line, ‘buy me a drink later.’ They’d taken too many casualties to get aboard a chopper and Beanie knew the man he was holding wouldn’t make it if he didn’t get in this chopper. Beanie convinced a lesser wounded man to trade places on the promise that he’d buy him a drink later. It became the catch phrase to every wounded and dying American GI they came across.

There was something comforting to a soldier holding his own intestines in with his hands at the thought that there might be a later. Most knew the truth of the wounds and stoically nodded and grinned, knowing that later meant a black body bag followed by a casket and military funeral. For those who looked the specter of death calmly in the face, later meant another life…another time…a new day.

And that was when every piece fell into place for Nick Blukowski. That was the singular movement when hope filled him like a huge hot air balloon.

There really was a later.

Sure, it was a different age, a new body, a fresh memory, but it existed nonetheless. There was more to this life than killing gooks and watching your buddies get blown apart. Whatever he had done in this life mattered. It wasn’t the end of the road. Well, it would be someday for Nick, but he would make a comeback…as a girl…as this girl who had come to save her brother. This girl who…

No…she wasn’t just any girl. She was a fearless girl; a champion.
